Alexis-Charles-Henri Clérel de Tocqueville was a French political thinker and historian. His most notable work is Democracy in America and  The Old Regime and the Revolution. He analysed the living conditions and socio-economic policies of America. He was also active in the French politics.

Tocqueville came from an old Norman aristocratic family. Tocqueville had a tough and sickly childhood. Despite that, he chose to follow politics and became quite successful at it. A longtime sufferer from bouts of tuberculosis, Tocqueville eventually succumbed to the disease on 16 April 1859.
