Rutherford B. Hayes quotes

Rutherford Birchard Hayes was the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881. Before assuming office as President, Hayes served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as governor of Ohio. As an abolitionist and a lawyer, he defended refugee slaves in court proceedings. He brought post-Civil War Reconstruction to an end in the South and tried to establish new standards of official integrity after eight years of corruption in Washington, D.C.

Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, on October 4, 1822. Hayes studied law at Harvard, where he completed a bachelor of laws degree in 1845. In 1876, the Electoral College made Hayes president in one of the most contentious elections in U.S. history. Hayes implemented modest civil-service reforms that laid the groundwork for further reform in the 1880s and 1890s. Hayes declined to pursue re-election in 1880, keeping his pledge not to run for a second term. He passed away on January 17, 1893.
