Andrew Johnson quotes

Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He assumed office after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by virtue of being the vice president. He was the first president to be impeached. He served in the Tennessee legislature and U.S. Congress, and was governor of Tennessee. Six weeks after Johnson was inaugurated as U.S. vice president in 1865, Lincoln was murdered.

Andrew Johnson was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on December 29, 1808. A tailor before he entered politics, Johnson grew up poor and lacked formal education. Johnson’s political career began in 1829 when he was elected alderman in Greeneville. Slavery became an increasingly important issue during Johnson’s time in Congress in the 1840s. He assumed office as the Civil War concluded. He favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union without protection for the former slaves, a stance which eventually led to his impeachment. Johnson passed away on July 31, 1875.
