Albert Camus was a French philosopher, author and journalist. He was the second-youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44. Born in Algeria to French parents, he spent most of his childhood in a poor neighborhood. He studied philosophy at the University of Algiers. He joined the French Resistance when the Germans invaded France during World War II. Camus was politically active and opposed the Soviet Union’s ideology of totalitarianism.
