Desmond Mpilo Tutu was a South African Anglican bishop. He was widely known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996 and was the first black African to hold the position. In 1984, he received the Nobel Prize for Peace for his role in the opposition to apartheid in South Africa.

Desmond Tutu was born on 7 October 1931. Even though he wanted a medical career, Tutu was unable to afford the required education and instead became a schoolteacher. In 1972 he served as an associate director for the World Council of Churches and further was promoted to the general secretary of the South African Council of Churches. He was one of the leading activists standing against the apartheid. He emphasized nonviolent means of protests and economic pressure by other countries. He died on 26 December 2021.
