Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, one of the country’s greatest conflicts. He is acclaimed and celebrated for his success in preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, bolstering the federal government and modernizing the U.S. economy. 

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a family riddled with poverty. He was self-educated and then became a lawyer. He entered politics and became a Whig Party leader, before retiring in 1849 and re-entered politics in 1854, becoming a leader in the new Republican Party. He engineered the end to slavery with his Emancipation Proclamation and his order that the Army protect and recruit former slaves. He was widely popular among his people and still is remembered as one of the greatest American Presidents. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was attending a play at Ford’s Theatre with his wife Mary when he was assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. It was a tragedy that shook the nation.
