Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. Before becoming president, Nixon served as the 36th vice president from 1953 to 1961. He rose to national prominence as a representative and senator from California. He became the only president to resign from office, following the Watergate scandal. He was later given a presidential pardon by the succeeding president.

Richard Milhous Nixon was born on January 9, 1913, in Yorba Linda, California, into a poor family. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946. He unsuccessfully ran for president in 1960, narrowly losing to John F. Kennedy. Nixon then lost a race for governor of California to Pat Brown in 1962. In 1968, he ran for the presidency again and was elected, defeating Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace in a close election. Nixon ended American involvement in Vietnam in 1973. He died at the age of 81 on April 22, 1994.
