Lyndon Baines Johnson was an American politician who served as the 36th president of the United States from 1963 to 1969. He also served as the vice-president and assumed office after the assassination of former president John F. Kennedy. During his administration, he signed the Civil Rights Act (1964), the most comprehensive civil rights legislation since the Reconstruction era, initiated major social service programs, and bore the brunt of national opposition to his vast expansion of American involvement in the Vietnam War.

Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908. Johnson worked as a high school teacher and a congressional aide before winning election to the US House of Representatives in 1937. A Democrat from Texas, Johnson also served as a United States Representative and as the Majority Leader in the United States Senate. He brought about many social and civil changes during his presidency including The Voting Rights Act that ended the mass disenfranchisement of African Americans in the South and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 which permitted greater immigration from regions other than Europe. He vehemently opposed racial segregation. He passed away on January 22, 1973.
