James Monroe was an American statesman, lawyer, and diplomat who served as the fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825. He was one of the Founding Fathers, who united the Thirteen Colonies and led the war for independence from Great Britain, and built a frame of government for the new United States of America. He is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, an important contribution to U.S. foreign policy, a warning to European nations against intervening in the Western Hemisphere.

James Monroe was born on April 28, 1758, in his parents’ house in a wooded area of Westmoreland County, Virginia. Monroe was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1782 and was chosen a member of the governor’s council. He left the Senate in 1794 to serve as President George Washington’s ambassador to France but was recalled by Washington in 1796. In 1816 Monroe was elected president of the United States as the Republican candidate. He died on July 4, 1831, in New York City.
